Basic Concepts & Definitions in Speech Language Pathology
“Speech or Language Impairment” means a communication disorder, such as stuttering, impaired articulation, a language impairment, or voice impairment that adversely affects a child’s educational performance.
Definitions
●Articulation describes an individual’s speech.
●Articulation disorder refers to difficulties with the motor production aspects of speech, or an inability to produce certain speech sounds.
●Language is complex and involves multiple domains—nonverbal language, oral language (i.e., listening and speaking), written language (i.e., reading and writing), pragmatic language (i.e. using language for a specific purpose such as asking for help), phonology, and audiology.
●Language disorder is impairment in “comprehension and/or use of a spoken, written, and/or other symbol system.
●Voice impairment is an excess or significant deficiency in pitch, intensity, or quality resulting from pathological conditions or inappropriate use of the vocal mechanism.
●Fluency impairment is abnormal interruption in the flow of speech by repetitions or prolongations of a sound, syllable, or by avoidance and struggle behaviors.
►The characteristics as defined above if present cause an adverse effect on educational performance in the general education classroom or learning environment.
►Speech/language deficiencies identified cannot be attributed to characteristics of second language acquisition and/or dialectical differences.
